In 1887 Arthur Conan Doyle, an unknown doctor in the suburbs, gave to the press "A Study in Scarlet," the novel that saw the debut of two famous literary characters: Dr. Watson, in whose modest remains are concealed the alter ego of the author, and the brilliant Sherlock Holmes, the detective par excellence.
